The end is surely nigh after another embarrassing loss for Manchester United, who fell 3-1 at the hands of Brentford in London on Saturday.
The Reds conceded twice in the first half to Igor Thiago, one an excellent finish on a route one ball, and the other a close-range strike after poor organization allowed a direct attack on United’s goal. Benjamin Sesko got his first goal for the club in the 26th minute. It was the third of three shot attempts in just a matter of seconds, a sequence which generated half of the team’s xG on the day as well as half of its shots on target and three of its four big chances.
It was positive for Sesko to finally get one in, but it was telling of United’s form and abysmal setup under manager Ruben Amorim that they once again failed to build on the only positive moments in the match.
Matheus Cunha had a chance saved early in the second half, and then United proceeded to go 20 minutes without another chance. The next one that came their way was a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes hit weakly and noticeably without confidence to Kelleher’s left. It was saved easily and United whiffed on a gift of a chance to equalize.
The penalty, by the way, accounted for most of the rest of United’s xG on the day.
Brentford sealed the win with a goal in the 90th minute, another good finish, this time Mathias Jensen capitalizing on a giveaway from Kobbie Mainoo as he struggled to find options to get the ball out.
Ruben Amorim, through 49 games now, has 19 wins, 9 draws and 21 defeats in charge of United. His away record in the Premier League is atrocious, at 3 wins, 5 draws and 9 defeats.
The manager is adamant on sticking to his preferred 3-4-3 setup, a structure that has yet to get the best of any United player in the system while constantly getting stuck in the mud on the attacking end. The defensive structure is poor as well, conceding goals willy nilly despite having 5 defenders on the pitch at any given time.
At this point it should only be a matter of time. We have seen Amorim try and fail time and again to force square pegs into round holes, insisting on playing in a manner and shape that gets the best out of no one and shows a serious lack of understanding of his players and their strengths and weaknesses.
United have another match at home against Sunderland before the next international break.
