What a terrific start for Trey Yesavage. Five innings, five hits, two walks, and five strikeouts. Three of the five hits were infield singles. Only one of the hits wasn’t a ground ball. He had four ground outs to one fly out.
It would have been that much better if it weren’t for Andrés Giménez’ error. With a runner on first, Andrés backed up on a bouncer towards him. I think he tried to rush the play to get a double play, but he didn’t come up with the ball in the glove. It was his first error at short and just his third on the season, but it cost Trey a lot of pitches.
He’s guaranteed himself a spot in our playoff rotation.
We scored:
- Three in the third: Addison Barger started it with a single. Davis Schneider walked (he has more walks than hits this month). After outs from Daulton Varsho (strikeout) and Alejandro Kirk (lineout, good contact, that bodes well for later) Ernie Clement doubled in two and Giménez singled in the third.
- One in the fifth: Clement singled to start the inning. Two fly outs later (Giménez and Spriner), Clement stole second. He had such a huge jump, I thought there was something wrong at first. Then Lukes singled him home.
- One in the seventh: Kirk crushed a home run.109.3 mph, 432 feet.
We had just seven hits, but they were grouped nicely. Clement had two hits. Going hitless: Vlad, Schneider (with two walks), and Varsho.
Our bullpen did a great job:
- Yariel Rodríguez: Allowed a solo homer and a walk in the sixth, but came back strong, with two strikeouts.
- Justin Bruihl: Just called up, and he hadn’t been great when he was up earlier in the season, so I was worried, but he had a perfect seventh, with two strikeouts.
- Tommy Nance gave up a single to start the eighth, but then got a ground ball to Vlad at first, who thought to touch the bag before throwing the second starting a 3-6-3-6 double play.
- Seranthony Domínguez gave up a walk in the ninth, but got two strikeouts.
Jays of the Day: Yesavage (.232 WPA) and Cement (.207).
Other Award: Varsho (-.091).
Nathan Lukes had an outfield assist, with a huge ummmm assist from Addison Barger. Bob Seymour lined one to right, Chandler Simpson, who is fast, tagged up from second and went to third. Lukes made a very nice throw to third, but Chandler was at the bag when the ball got to Barger. But Chandler overslid the bag. Addison tagged him, but dropped the ball. He picked it up again and tagged Simpson again—a massive out at the time.
So tomorrow is a big day. Jays win and they win the AL East and get a bye to the ALDS.
