Robert Lewandowski’s header gave Barcelona all three points against Real Sociedad on Sunday night, helping the Blaugrana take over as the new leaders in La Liga.

It was not a simple outing for the Catalans by any means, and some poor luck in front of goal, coupled with a great performance from the opposition goalkeeper, meant they were frustrated in the final third.

Lewandowski’s header, however, came at an opportune moment after an inspired cross from Lamine Yamal and pushed them into the lead, completing yet another comeback win.

A special milestone

The Polish international’s strike on the night was his 105th official goal with the club and takes him level with the likes of Neymar Jr., Evaristo and Zaldua.

In fact, it brings him into the top 20 goal scorers in Barcelona’s history.

Arriving at the club late in his career, the veteran has defied logic and maintained consistency for the Catalans, and he is now just 24 goals away from breaking into Barcelona’s top ten goalscorers of all time. Needless to say, he is already a club legend given his numbers.

Lewandowski’s goal also takes him to the top spot as Barcelona’s highest goalscorer this season, alongside Ferran Torres.

Both players have four goals to their name, although the Polish star has played fewer minutes owing to an injury at the beginning of the season.

Mariano Martin is currently the tenth highest goalscorer in the club’s history with 129 goals to his name, and Lewandowski can well catch up if he keeps up his positive run of form and fitness.

The player’s strong performances back why Hansi Flick and Co. continue to count on the player despite his age and even open the possibility of extending his deal for another year if he can stay consistent.

After all, the striker market in football is heavily inflated, and it is complicated for the club to sign a big-name striker next summer.
