Dani Carvajal was shown a straight red card in the opening Champions League group-stage clash against Olympique de Marseille after losing his composure in an altercation with goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli. The veteran right-back was dismissed for a headbutt late in the match, leaving Madrid to finish the game with 10 men.
UEFA has now confirmed the disciplinary outcome: a two-match suspension.
For Real Madrid, the initial reaction was that this would be a significant blow, particularly as Trent Alexander-Arnold is sidelined for a few weeks. Losing both of their first-choice right-backs at once could have left Xabi Alonso short of options. It still does, however, the impact of the decision is somewhat softened by Carvajal’s own injury, which is expected to rule him out for about a month. In practice, Alonso was not going to be able to count on the Spanish right-back during this stretch anyway.
If Real Madrid are lucky, Carvajal could be back for El Clasico later in the month, but that’s optimistic.
