Bayern Munich got it right by letting Leroy Sané walk

A good move…

There was a certain amount of comfort with Leroy Sané for the Bayern Munich executives.

Always a tantalizing talent, Sané was always good for a handful of spectacular games every season that would wet the beak for fans waiting and hoping for the day that it all would finally click for the wayward winger.

At some point during the summer, though, things changes and the price point to retain the German priced out Bayern Munich because Galatasaray desperately wanted Sané.

Through the early part of this season, it is clear that Bayern Munich caught a lucky break that the Turkish power swept in to take Sané, who has been…well, less-than-stellar. The 29-year-old has one goal and two assists in eight games across all competitions thus far and has been lackluster per Sport1’s write up from the weekend:

Galatasaray Istanbul remains the benchmark in the Turkish Süper Lig. In their seventh league match, Okan Buruk’s team celebrated their seventh victory with a 1-0 win against Alanyaspor. Gala temporarily extended its lead to nine points.

Mauro Icardi scored the most impressive goal of the day with a heel in the 23rd minute. Two minutes earlier, Leroy Sané could have given the visitors the lead, but his close-range header from Eren Elmali’s cross was saved by goalkeeper Ertugrul Taskiran. In the 77th minute, the German, who had recently been withdrawn from the national team by national coach Julian Nagelsmann, was finally taken off. He was substituted for Metehan Baltaci.

That was just the most recent uneventful showing for Sané, who has tallied the following ratings for his performances from Sofascore.com:

  • September 26th: 6.1 vs Alanyaspor
  • September 22nd: 6.8 vs. Konyaspor
  • September 18th: 6.2 vs. Eintracht Frankfurt
  • September 13th: 6.8 vs. Eyüpspor
  • August 30th: 6.7 vs. Rizespor
  • August 25th: 9.3 vs. Kayserispor
  • August 15th: 6.7 vs. Fatih Karagümrük S.K.
  • August 8th: 7.0 vs. Gaziantep

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich replaced Sané with Luis Díaz, who has four goals and three assists in eight games across all competitions so far and looks like a far better fit with the club’s attacking group.

Sometimes, you just have to leave your comfort zone as a club.

Bayern Munich is cruising and heading into another Champions League, so let’s take a look at the factors that have powered the team so far.

Harry Kane has been a beast, the squad is driven, and — by and large — personnel decisions have worked out well. Let’s get into all of that and more on this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works Show. This is what we have on tap:

  • Why has Harry Kane been better than ever? (Less need for him to work in build-up, better complimentary players around him — losing Sane and Coman was massive, more aggressive attacking game plan and sometime more direct, truly the focal point
  • Is it possible that Harry Kane will stay at Bayern Munich? He is not dismissing the possibility.
  • Yes! We avoided a #BayernKaren situation. We are rejoicing this in Philadelphia.
  • Tying up some loose ends — let’s check in on Leroy Sane, Kingsley Coman, João Palhinha, Paul Wanner, Mathys Tel, and Adam Aznou.
