Dolphins waive former second-round pick Cam Smith

The Dolphins move on from their former second-round draft pick after just two years.

The Miami Dolphins made a surprise roster move on Tuesday, ending a disappointing tenure for a former second-round draft pick. After starting the year on the non-football injury list, cornerback Cam Smith is now headed to the waiver wire, according to an announcement from the team. The move comes just two years after the team selected Smith 51st overall out of South Carolina in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Smith struggled to see the field during his first two seasons in the league, making most of his appearances on special teams. He played in 15 games, but made just 20 defensive snaps, compared to 210 special teams snaps, as a rookie. Last year, he was limited to just six games played due to injuries, appearing in 133 snaps on defense and 55 on special teams.

The frustration with Smith and his availability continued into this year, where he was limited in training camp and the preseason. His disappointing tenure with Miami ended with 18 tackles in 21 games played.
