The latest set of Virginia high school football Top 25 rankings sees some movement within the Top 10 teams as the season has reached the midway point.
The Maury Commodores remain firmly at the top as the state’s No. 1 ranked team, followed by Dinwiddie, Oscar Smith, Benedictine and Colonial Forge. Which other teams join them in this week’s rankings?
The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.
Here is the latest Virginia high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Oct. 1.
1. Maury Commodores
The Maury Commodores stay atop of the Virginia high school football rankings after their largest margin of victory this season, a 77-6 rout of previously undefeated Churchland.
When looking at the Commodores, this team has plenty of talent to remain at the top the rest of the way, including on offense at the wide receiver position. Maury features James Madison commitment Elijah Moss-Williams and Jahvon Wiggins. Junior running back TayShawn Branche had a big hand in the win against Bishop McNamara a couple weeks ago, rushing for 159 yards and scoring a touchdown.
Next up for the top-ranked Commodores is a matchup against a winless B. T. Washington (0-4) squad.
2. Dinwiddie Generals
The Dinwiddie Generals (5-0) have been very impressive through the first half of the season thus far, with the latest victory being a 36-0 defeat over Matoaca, the team’s second straight shutout.
Dinwiddie has received solid play from senior quarterback Zion Boisseau, who has amassed over 800 all-purpose yards and 13 total touchdowns.
Now heading to the midway point, the Generals are looking to remain undefeated when they take on Hopewell tomorrow night.
3. Oscar Smith Tigers
Ever since losing the season opener to Gonzaga, Tigers have followed it up by beating Warwick 24-6 and Indian River, 33-20. Oscar Smith, the defending Class 6 state champions, made it three in a row last week when they upended previously undefeated King’s Fork, 42-14.
The Tigers has a myriad of Power 4 level talent up and down its roster, with players like Travis Johnson (Michigan commit), Jayden Covil (Virginia commit) and Na’Rod Jarvis (Buffalo commit).
The Tigers take aim at winning a fourth straight when they face Hickory (2-2).
4. Benedictine Cadets
The reigning VISAA Division I state champions have won eight straight games, including five from this season. Through five games, Benedictine has out-scored their opponents 201-24 this season. The Cadets have been arguably the state’s most dominant team to date and it hasn’t been all that close whatsoever.
The Cadets’ offense is led by Wisconsin commit Maddox Cochrane and Coastal Carolina pledge Jojo Johnson. Up next for Benedictine is a showdown of DMV powerhouses in the nation’s capital against the District of Columbia’s top-ranked Gonzaga.
5. Colonial Forge Eagles
The newest member into the Top 5 of the latest set of Virginia high school football rankings is Colonial Forge, as the Eagles (5-0) are coming off a thrilling 27-26 win over North Stafford.
Colonial Forge has averaged 36.4 points per game on offense and leading the way is senior quarterback Brock Brimhall, who has thrown for 903 yards, nine touchdowns and only two interceptions. The Eagles are back on the field on the road this Friday when they face Stafford.
