Cape Town City suffered a 1-0 defeat to 10-man Leicesterford City in the Motsepe Foundation Championship at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday.

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Phathutshedzo Nange, who captains the newly rebranded NFD side, scored the crucial goal that downed the Cape club.

The defeat left the Citizens still searching for their first win in the second division, having failed to claim maximum points in their opening six league outings.

City are flirting with danger as they remain stagnant in 14th place on the log standings, and level on three points with the first relegation spot with an extra match played.

The Cape club was demoted from the Betway Premiership via the PSL Promotion/Relegation playoffs following a dismal 15th place finish in the topflight last season.

With the situation getting dire, club boss John Comitis will be keen to avoid replicating fellow Western Cape outfit Cape Town Spurs, who suffered back-to-back relegations.

The Urban Warriors lost their professional status after they dropped to the third tier, which subsequently saw elite clubs poaching their players on free transfers.

Meanwhile, City will regroup and gear up for their clash against newly promoted Midland Wanderers after the FIFA international break.
