Virginia Tech EDGE Keyshawn Burgos was removed from the program and is expected to enter the transfer portal, multiple sources tell On3. The senior is expected to redshirt and have one year of eligibility remaining, as he only played in four games in 2025.
A consistent contributor for the Hokies, Burgos played in 41 career games at Virginia Tech. The 6-foot-6, 260-pound pass rusher has 58 career tackles, eight tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He also registered a forced fumble and fumble recovery during his time in Blacksburg.
“They’re not with our football team anymore,” Virginia Tech interim head coach Philip Montgomery said earlier this week, referring to Burgos. “That is part of this process that we’ve been going through. So, our focus is going to stay with the guys who are on our roster and what’s in our locker room. Those guys continue to grow and really weld together and we’ll continue to focus on what we’ve got too, which is a Wake [Forest] game right here in front of us.”
Virginia Tech fired Brent Pry in September, opening the 30-day transfer portal window for players. Burgos marks the fourth player to enter the transfer portal for the Hokies. Since Virginia Tech parted ways with Pry, Montgomery has gone 2-0 as interim, including an ACC win over NC State last weekend.
Last week on X, attorney Darren Heitnershared that one of his Virginia Tech clients was in an “untenable position that a decision to redshirt constitutes opting out and fraudulent misrepresentation under the NCAA’s Bylaws, justifying immediate termination of scholarships and revenue-sharing payments under the House settlement. Redshirting is a standard practice to preserve eligibility, not voluntary withdrawal from a program, and schools cannot void revenue-sharing payments on pay-for-play grounds. I have been retained by a Hokies player to aggressively challenge this and am happy to assist any others facing similar issues.”
More than 3,300 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2024-25 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at just over 3,000 transfers. The NCAA eliminated the spring transfer portal window in September, but no dates have been set for the one-time-only window.
Virginia Tech hosts Wake Forest on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on the CW Network.
