⚽BOYS SOCCER

Burrillville 2, Prout 0

You can just about see the Division III boys soccer playoffs from here and Burrillville looks ready.

The Broncos aced a road test Thursday evening at Prout, retaining the top spot in the tournament standings thanks to a crisp all-around performance.

Ethan Withington and Sam Hernandez took turns setting one another up for a first-half goal, and Burrillville protected its lead from there. Cayden Closson recorded a shutout between the posts as the Broncos notched a 2-0 victory over the Crusaders at Cooney Field.

Hernandez struck in the 21st minute and Withington gave the visitors some insurance in the 34th minute. Closson made a couple fine saves between those two strikes and another with 12 minutes to play in regulation, as Burrillville won its eighth straight match.

“We’re in great shape right now,” Withington said. “That’s what we’re thinking about – that end goal of winning that championship.”

The Broncos had two specific targets while on the attack in this match – the open spaces wide of Prout’s back three and behind its two wingbacks. Withington found one first, racing in down the right side and cutting a pass back across for Hernandez. He fired under the crossbar with his right foot to make it 1-0.

“We know what we have individually,” Withington said. “We know our skills. But that’s not going to work – we can’t just dribble through the whole team.”

Burrillville doubled the advantage when Hernandez chipped a pass down the middle into the Crusaders penalty area, allowing Withington to run onto it. He held off a defender to gain control and hit the lower left corner with an accurate shot that made it a two-goal cushion.

“We just connect,” Withington said. “We’re always on the same page. It’s become a great duo up top.”

Hernandez and his brother, Juan, are both seniors who transferred in from Tolman. The Broncos (8-1-0) added two immediate starters to a lineup that has only lost to Scituate, the league champions who now play up in Division II. Prout (5-2-2) has dropped two straight to Toll Gate and Burrillville, two teams who sit above them in the standings.

“We knew going into this game that it was going to be tough and they were top of the league just like us,” Withington said. “We knew what we had to do coming in.”
