One of boxing's biggest legends will appear at a night of pro boxing in Rockford Friday night at Hard Rock Casino Live.
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Friday night will be a big night of boxing in Rockford at Hard Rock Casino Live. Several professional bouts will happen including Rockford’s own Seth Swinehart stepping into the ring.
The event is being put on by Hitz Boxing. The special guest will be the great Roy Jones Jr. He was at Hard Rock Casino Rockford Thursday night for an invitation only meet-and-greet even which I was able to attend.
Jones Jr. held world championships as a professional in four weight divisions from middleweight to heavyweight. He was named boxing’s “Fighter of the Decade” for the ‘90s.
In 1988, he won a silver medal in the Seoul Olympics. He was recently presented with the gold medal because many people, including the gold medalist, believed Jones Jr. deserved the gold medal. Jones Jr. was an Olympic teammate of Rockford’s own Kenny Gould. Gould won a bronze medal in boxing that year.
I asked Jones Thursday night what he considers to be his proudest moment as a boxer. To hear his answer, watch the media player above.
NOTE: Doors will open at 5 p.m. for the boxing event Friday evening at Hard Rock Casino Rockford. The first fight will begin at 6pm.
