Robert Griffin III has had his share of highs and lows in the spotlight—from his electrifying Heisman Trophy win at Baylor to a rollercoaster NFL career with the Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Ravens.

Now a Fox Sports analyst, Griffin has managed to keep himself in the public eye through both his work in the booth and occasional controversies, including candid social media takes that often spark debate. But on Friday, October 3, his name was trending for a far different reason.

According to PEOPLE, the 35-year-old was traveling through Fort Worth, Texas, with his wife Grete Šadeiko Griffin and their children when their Mercedes Sprinter van was involved in what he called the “worst car accident of our lives.”

Griffin shared details of the incident on X, writing, “Scary crash, ricocheted off the highway divider multiple times, blown both front tires. Thankful to God that my wife and kids are safe.”

Photos posted by Griffin show the front of the van heavily damaged, while another vehicle—a white sedan—was wrecked and blocking traffic.

According to the Fort Worth Police Department, the crash occurred around 11:48 a.m. on the South Freeway and involved four vehicles. Officers arrived on the scene to find three cars still present; one had already left.

Medical personnel transported at least one occupant to a nearby hospital, though their condition has not been disclosed.

The timing of the accident was particularly striking. Griffin, who lives in Houston, was in Fort Worth to cover the TCU vs. Colorado game scheduled for Saturday night.

Just hours before the crash, Grete posted about how much she loved traveling with him when his work brought him closer to home. The couple shares three young daughters—Gloria, Gameya, and Gia—while Griffin also has a daughter, Reese Ann, from a previous relationship.

In the aftermath, both Robert and Grete turned to social media to share relief that their children were safe. Grete wrote, “Thank God our kids are safe,” with heart and crying emojis.

Baylor University, where Griffin won the 2011 Heisman, also weighed in, offering prayers and expressing gratitude that the family avoided more serious injuries.
