Fisk shoots 64 to outduel 54-hole leader Garrick Higgo for his maiden PGA Tour title
Steven Fisk posted an 8-under 64 on Sunday at The Country Club of Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi to win the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Fisk birdied the final three holes to edge 54-hole leader Garrick Higgo of South Africa by two shots and card a 72-hole total of 24-under 264.
Fisk, 28, hugged his wife, who leaped into his arms on the 18th green, as they both shed tears for his first PGA Tour title.
"I came out today with an attitude that nothing was going to stop me from what I wanted no matter what happened today. I just felt like I was going to be standing right here, right now, before today started," Fisk said.
Asked how he did it, he said, "self belief, grit, I know I'm good enough and I finally did it."
Fisk started the final round three shots back at 16 under and opened with birdies on two of his first three holes. He made his lone bogey of the day at No. 4, but bounced back with a birdie at No. 5.
Higgo fell off the pace with bogeys at Nos. 10 and 11 but made it a fight to the finish with four straight birdies beginning at No. 13. Fisk drained from 41 feet at 16 but Higgo answered from 11 feet. It took a birdie-birdie finish for Fisk to slam the door on his first triumph, including hitting his approach at 18 to inside 4 feet.
"It's a lifelong dream, honestly," Fisk said. "Sometimes you doubt yourself but I felt like I could do it. It's been a long hard year."
The rookie Fisk entered the week at 135th in the FedEx Cup Fall standings but now the Georgia Southern University graduate has a two-year exemption.
"I try to do the same thing every week and it finally worked out," he said.
Rasmus Højgaard, Vince Whaley and Danny Walker tied for third at 19 under.
