Egypt's World Cup Dream Ends in Pain, as Africa's Other Giants March on to the Knockouts
Egypt’s U20 team saw their FIFA U20 World cup campaign end in heartbreak after finishing outside the top 4 among 3rd placed teams despite dramatic 2 - 1 win over hosts Chile on Sunday.
Late drama not enough to save Egypt’s hopes
The Young Pharaohs delivered spirited display in their final Group D match sealing victory in the dying seconds to leapfrog New Zealand into 3rd place behind Chile & Japan.
However the result wasn’t enough. Egypt needed other group outcomes to go their way but wins for Spain, Australia and France in their respective groups saw Osama Nabih’s team drop to 6th in the third place ranking ending their knockout stage hopes.

Egypt collected three points from their 3 match .. losing 2-0 to Japan, 2-1 to New Zealand and defeating Chile 2-1.
Their goal difference of -2 with 3 goal scored, placed them just behind Australia (-2 but with 4 goal).
It marks Egypt’s 4th early exit from the tournament after similar group stage eliminations in 1991, 2005 and 2013. Their best achievement remains third place in 2001 under coach Shawky Gharib.
