Luton Town have dismissed manager Matt Bloomfield after just nine months in charge, following Saturday’s 2–0 defeat at Stevenage, a result that leaves the Hatters 11th in League One, BBC Sport reports. The decision ends a turbulent spell for Bloomfield, who won 12 of his 33 matches and endured relegation from the Championship with the club.
Bloomfield, 41, arrived from Wycombe Wanderers in January, replacing Rob Edwards with Luton deep in Championship trouble. Despite a brief late-season resurgence, they were relegated on goal difference after a dramatic 5–3 loss to West Bromwich Albion on the final day. Hopes of a reset this season faded swiftly: an encouraging start of three wins in four gave way to four defeats in seven, prompting discontent among supporters.
The atmosphere turned toxic in recent weeks, with fans chanting “we want our Luton back” after the Stevenage loss. Chief executive Gary Sweet had publicly backed Bloomfield just 10 days earlier, calling him “incredibly capable” but warning the club would “have no qualms” about acting if results failed to improve, a promise duly kept.
Bloomfield’s backroom staff, including assistant Richard Thomas and coach Lee Harrison, also depart, while former Luton midfielder Alex Lawless assumes interim charge.
