The Washington Capitals have their Opening Night roster set as they trimmed it down to 23 players. The team had to submit its final roster by the 5 p.m. deadline on Monday.
Capitals Trim Roster to 23
On Sunday, the Capitals announced that Clay Stevenson and Ethen Frank were placed on waivers. Today, both players cleared waivers and have been assigned to the AHL’s Hershey Bears.
Stevenson staying within the organization is a huge deal. He had an impressive training camp as many NHL teams expressed interest in the 26-year-old goaltender. There were rumors that teams such as the Rangers, Hurricanes, and Golden Knights wanted him. Nevertheless, Stevenson gets to stay as the Bears’ No. 1 goaltender.
Washington announced on Monday that Ivan Miroshnichenko would also be sent down to Hershey. Despite an impressive camp, he was already on the bubble due to heavy competition at forward. This also means that Sonny Milano and Hendrix Lapierre officially made the roster.
The final roster cut turned out to be defenseman Dylan McIlrath, who was placed on injured reserve. As a result, McIlrath could not be placed on waivers. This means that Vincent Iorio, who was also on the bubble, will suit up for the Capitals. Iorio was another preseason standout for the club.
Meanwhile, fellow defensemen Matt Roy and Declan Chisholm are also dealing with injuries. Roy got hurt in the final preseason contest, while Chisholm suffered a skate cut at practice. Luckily, Washington head coach Spencer Carbery said that Chisholm will be okay.
