For the second week in a row, there’s a new team atop the Alabama high school football rankings.
After beating the former No. 1 team in the state two weeks ago, Clay-Chalkville rolled once again last weekend, improved to 7-0 and has now taken over the top spot, replacing Hewitt-Trussville, which dropped to No. 3 after a loss to No. 2 Thompson.
Just about every week of the season in the Yellowhammer State has seen myriad ranked matchups. This coming Friday, though, just two top-25 showdowns are on the docket as the final push to the postseason gets going. Below are the top 25 teams in Alabama after week seven, according to the Massey Ratings.
1. Clay-Chalkville Cougars (7-0)
After handing then-No. 1 Thompson its first in-state loss of the season, Clay-Chalkville had no hangover on Friday night as it went to Mountain Brook and blanked the No. 17 Spartans 49-0. Senior quarterback Aaron Frye did it all in the win, throwing for 215 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 117 yards and another score. Senior four-star wide receiver Corey Barber caught two of Frye’s TD throws and tallied 71 yards. That was the last ranked matchup of the regular season for the Cougars, who now look poised to enter the postseason undefeated. They take on 1-5 Huffman next.
2. Thompson Warriors (5-2)
In the game of the week in the state, Thompson bounced back with a no-doubt 34-12 win over Hewitt-Trussville. The Warriors did plenty of damage through the air as junior four-star quarterback Trent Seaborn completed 31 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns. Three Thompson receivers caught seven passes in the win. The Warriors are now 2-1 through a five-game stretch against ranked opponents. They now host No. 14 Hillcrest this week with a trip to No. 8 Hoover on deck.
3. Hewitt-Trussville Huskies (6-1)
The Thompson defense proved far too stubborn for Hewitt-Trussville on Friday. The Huskies were held to 144 passing yards and 132 rushing yards in the 22-point loss, their first of the season. Four different Huskies had seven or more rushing attempts, but only one — senior James Kelly — averaged over 4.0 yards per carry. No longer undefeated, HT still has everything to play for down the stretch and is heavily favored to win each of its final three regular season games. It heads to Prattville, a top-40 team in the state, this week.
4. Central Red Devils (6-1)
Central asserted itself in a big 7A matchup last week, stymying top-10 Auburn in a 36-0 shutout. On just 14 completions, junior quarterback Bobby Coleman threw for 242 yards and three touchdowns. Four Red Devils finished with six or more tackles in the win. With their lone loss coming in the previous week to Florida power IMG Academy, they still look like one of the top teams in Alabama and are favored to finish the regular season at 9-1. That won’t be easy, though, as they head to No. 10 Carver this week, then host No. 11 Opelika on Oct. 17.
5. Saraland Spartans (6-0)
Saraland was on a bye last week and dropped one spot to No. 5. The Spartans won a huge regular-season opener over Jackson — now No. 26 — and haven’t played another ranked game since. They haven’t allowed more than 14 points in a game all year. They now host top-30 St. Paul’s Episcopal this week and are projected to win by 33 points, per the Massey Ratings.
6. Vestavia Hills Rebels (4-2)
Vestavia Hills is also coming off a bye week. Last time out, it rolled past Prattville 56-28. The Rebels’ pair of losses have come at the hands of No. 2 Thompson and No. 3 Hewitt-Trussville. They now have just one ranked matchup left on the schedule — Oct. 24 vs. No. 8 Hoover — and will get back on the field this Thursday, taking on 3-3 Oak Mountain.
7. Auburn Tigers (5-2)
Auburn was outclassed in its 36-0 defeat to No. 4 Central last week. Star junior quarterback Cason Myers was held to just 109 passing yards and an interception, while the Tigers finished with just 64 rushing yards. In Auburn’s five wins, it has held opponents to 30 total points. In its two losses, it has allowed 78 points. Two ranked matchups are still on the schedule, but first, the Tigers take on 2-5 Smiths Station this Friday.
8. Hoover Buccaneers (4-3)
Hoover went on the road and dispatched of Oak Mountain 48-21 last week, continuing an absurd trend to the 2025 season. The Buccaneers are now 4-0 on the road, yet 0-3 at home at the Hoover Met. Their best chance to get a win at home will finally come this week, as winless Tuscaloosa County makes the trip. No. 2 Thompson will also visit next week on Oct. 17.
9. Mary G Montgomery Vikings (7-0)
The Mary G Montgomery defense continues to look dominant. The Vikings have now allowed just 15 total points across their last three games following a 42-8 drubbing of Alma Bryant last week. Junior running back Kamron Smith rushed for two touchdowns in the latest win. Upcoming matchups against Fairhope and Baker will serve as some of the toughest tests of the season for MGM.
10. Carver Wolverines (5-1)
The Carver offense continues to motor through opponents with Enterprise being the latest victim in a 49-14 win. The Wolverines jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and coasted from there. Senior Zion Crumpton had two passing touchdowns and one rushing score. Since a season-opening loss to Thompson, Carver has averaged over 43 points per game in its five wins. The remaining schedule is brutal. It will take on four of the top 11 teams in the state to close out the regular season, beginning with No. 4 Central this Friday.
