Who will John Cena step into the ring with for his final WWE match later this year?
The topic of John Cena’s final opponent has been a hot topic for all of 2025. Plenty of rumors and suggestions have been made. However, a report that first came to us earlier this Summer now seems to have a lot of validity.
Back in July, WRKD Wrestling reported that Gunther is currently scheduled to be John Cena’s final opponent. Tweeting out the following message following Goldberg’s retirement match against The Ring General on Saturday Night’s Main Event:
“Goldberg isn’t the last person that Gunther hopes to retire. Gunther is currently planned as John Cena’s final opponent,” WRKD Wrestling said in a post.
Dave Meltzer backs up WRKD Wrestling’s initial report
Three months later, this report has seemingly been confirmed by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, who posted the following news on his website, F4WOnline.
“Multiple sources over the last two days have confirmed the name and the WWE internal listing for the Saturday Night Main Event at this point lists that as the only match on the show,” Dave Meltzer wrote. “Two sources have confirmed that the latest plan is for a tournament to be announced, possibly on the air by Paul Levesque, with top wrestlers vying to be Cena’s last opponent. But multiple have confirmed however it reaches the conclusion, that Gunther was the person chosen for the match.”
As WRKD Wrestling pointed out in July, if Gunther gets this match, he will have the distinction of ending the careers of both Goldberg and John Cena in the same calendar year.
