NFL Fines Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones $250K for Flipping Off Fans — He Claims It Was Unintentional

The NFL has fined Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones $250,000 after he was seen on video giving the middle finger to fans at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

During the Cowboys’ game against the New York Jets, multiple fans recorded Jones appearing to interact with opposing fans from the owner’s suite. In the middle of this interaction, Jones held up his middle finger before pointing at someone and waving to someone else. At the time of the incident, the Cowboys were in the middle of a blowout win, and the gesture was widely viewed as Jones simply trash-talking the opposition.

The next day on Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan, Jones clarified that he actually didn’t mean to do that. Jones explained that there was a swath of Cowboys fans below the suite, and he wanted to interact with them. When he went to gesture to them, however, he “inadvertently” raised his middle finger. Jones called the move “unfortunate” and claimed he meant to give the Cowboys faithful a thumbs-up.

What was also unfortunate was the cost of that gesture. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the league on Tuesday decided to fine Jones a quarter of a million dollars.

As noted in a report from Todd Archer, Jones has the right to appeal the fine.
