FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — High school football teams returned to region play in week seven. St. Michael Catholic beat defending Class 4A state champion Jackson 49-39 a titanic matchup between the two powerhouse programs.
The win earned St. Michael head coach Philip Rivers our JBT Power Coach of the Week honor!
With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 6-0 overall. St. Michael is also the lone unbeaten team in Class 4A Region 1 (4-0). The Cardinals handed the Aggies their first region loss since September 2022.
Quarterback Gunner Rivers threw for more than 300 yards and five touchdown passes in the win. Running back Noah Moss added more than 100 yards on the ground with a pair of touchdowns.
The victory means a few big things moving forward for the program. The Cardinals are in the driver seat for the region title. Also, if they were to meet Jackson in the postseason, the game would be at St. Michael. The two programs met in the 4A semifinals last season.
Coach Rivers has a 35-15 career record in his fifth season with the Cardinals. St. Michael will play Mobile Christian on Friday night.
