Real Madrid’s Dean Huijsen has been ruled out of Spain’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Georgia and Bulgaria after being declared unfit.
The Spanish Football Federation confirmed that the young defender has returned to his club following medical examinations.
Huijsen, who joined Madrid during the summer transfer window, has quickly become a key figure in Xabi Alonso’s defence.
His calmness on the ball and strong physical presence have made him an important part of the team since his arrival.
However, his progress has been halted after showing signs of muscle fatigue while on international duty.
Defender’s injury details
According to reports, the 20-year-old arrived at Spain’s training camp in Elche on Monday night already feeling discomfort.
Medical staff decided he should rest, and he did not take part in training the following day. When his condition showed no improvement, Madrid were informed, and a further medical examination was carried out on Wednesday morning.
The report stated: “The Real Madrid defender arrived at the national team camp on Monday night showing signs of muscular fatigue. He did not train on Tuesday, and after his condition failed to improve, Real Madrid was informed of the situation. A medical test carried out on Wednesday morning confirmed a muscle injury, which has also been communicated to his club. Consequently, the player has been released from the squad, with the RFEF wishing him a speedy recovery.”
Laporte called up as replacement
Following the medical update, the Spanish federation confirmed that Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte has been called up as a replacement.
Spain will host Georgia in Elche before facing Bulgaria in Valladolid, and Luis de la Fuente will be keen to collect all six points from these fixtures.
Huijsen will now focus on his recovery during the international break in hopes of being available for Madrid’s next league match against Getafe on 19 October.
If he fails to recover in time, David Alaba is expected to take his place in defence until he regains full fitness.
The absence of Huijsen is a setback for both Spain and Madrid, as the young centre-back has been in fine form since the start of the season.
Nonetheless, both teams will be hoping he returns fully fit to continue his impressive run for club and country.
