Matt Law was on the London is Blue podcast this week with the chance to talk through the weekend’s excellent win over Liverpool.
Since then we’ve had the injury news that Reece James was going to withdraw from England duty, something of a blessing but also slightly worrying.
James’ injury explained by Chelsea insider

“Reece pulled out of England duty with what we’re told is a small ongoing issue, but that he definitely wouldn’t have been able to play the next two England games. I’m told it’s a short term injury – I don’t know if that takes him through the Nottingham Forest game or not, but that’s got to be a little bit touch and go.”
Many people assumed the injury problem was related to the gash on the shin that James showed off in an Instagram story after the game. Give Law describes it as “ongoing” we can only assume that’s not correct.
Malo Gusto or Josh Acheampong will be able to fill in for James if he does miss the game directly after the international break, but we all know we’re a far better team with him in it.
Law fears the worst for Chelsea season after disrupted summer
In general, Law had some pretty negative things to say about the bigger picture at Chelsea after a summer where we were playing at the Club World Cup and had almost no preseason.
“It’s just massive, massive injury problems, that I don’t see getting any better at any point this season. I think when people come back, you’ll find that other people go down. And people will have relapses as well. I think it’s going to be a horrible season for injuries for Chelsea.”
That’s why we’re not getting overexcited about the players coming back this week – there will be more to go down hurt before long.
