Ellen Walshe and Mona McSharry set new Irish short course records at the World Aquatics World Cup in Carmel, Indiana on Friday.

In the 25m pool course, Templeogue's Walshe took bronze in the 200m butterfly, smashing Michelle Smith's 1997 record by almost two seconds with a time of 2:05.07.

Walshe had recorded a personal best of 2:07.24 in the heats, leaving her well placed to add to last season's form when she broke nine Irish short course records and six long course (50m).

She did just that, finishing third in the final behind USA's Regan Smith whose winning time of 2:00.28 set a new World Cup record with Alex Shackell taking silver in 2:02.51.

Olympic bronze medallist McSharry set a new Irish 200m breaststroke Irish Record in the heats, finishing in 2:19.95 to break Niamh Coyne's 2021 record of 2:20.19.

The County Sligo native was slightly slower in the final, recording a time of 2:20.03 to place fifth overall.

Both are back in the pool on Saturday with Walshe in the 400m individual medley and McSharry in the 100m breaststroke.
