LSU football got the win over South Carolina Saturday night, but sophomore tight end Trey'Dez Green stole the show.
Despite an inconsistent offensive performance overall in the win against South Carolina, LSU football tight end Trey'Dez Green shined Saturday night.
"He's pretty good at football," Tigers head coach Brian Kelly said. "I don't know about the basketball thing, I'll let Matt (McMahon, LSU basketball coach) decide that, but clearly, he's a mismatch. You can throw fade balls to him, he'll catch the ball. He's a unique talent, and we need to continue to feature him in our offense."
After being limited by a knee injury earlier in the year — and posting stats of just two catches for 17 yards and a touchdown in his first three games this season — the sophomore had the finest game of his college career Saturday, Oct. 11.
With junior receiver Aaron Anderson out, LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier looked Green's way often, with Green posting career-highs with eight receptions for 119 yards and his second touchdown of the season.
"It actually boosted (my confidence)," Green said. "But I knew what I could do. I feel like my confidence coming into the game was kind of hesitant about my knee, but once I got that first catch, it was all good then."
Green not only set career-highs in catches and yards, he also became the third Tiger this season to catch eight passes in a game, and the first to do so against an SEC opponent — Anderson and Barion Brown both did so earlier this season, in LSU's win over Louisiana Tech — as well as the first Tigers receiver to cross the 100-yard mark in any game since Anderson did so in last season's Texas Bowl.
With Anderson out, Green knew Nussmeier was set to look his way early and often.
"I mean, I knew I had to step up and make plays," Green said. "Of course, Aaron is a big part of what we do in this offense, so I had to step up and make those plays."
Green credited his relationship with Nussmeier for his performance.
"The chemistry that we have, he kind of got in my ear and was like 'next play mentality,'" Green said. "I appreciate it so much. He's just my brother and I love him."
