The nation’s northernmost high school football team, the Barrow Whalers, were just a half dozen years removed from winning the ASAA Division III state championship.

The Whalers had a host of all-state seniors graduate, meaning the Whalers needed to quickly re-tool as they took aim at winning the program’s first state title since 2017. On Saturday, Barrow clinched its ticket to playing for the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) Division III title.

Barrow defeated Kenai Central, 28-14, securing the Whalers’ berth in the state championship game, which is slated to be played on either Oct. 18, 2 p.m. at Wasilla High School. The Whalers will face Homer, whom they defeated during the regular season, 22-14.

Whalers’ head coach Chris Battle posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, the conditions ahead of the state semifinal matchup against Kenai Central. Barrow will head into the state championship final with a record of 7-3.

Battle’s bunch has relied on a strong rushing attack, that’s leaned on a trio of runners to lead the way to next weekend’s title game. Leading the way on the ground is junior running back Malu Lauvao, who has rushed for 761 yards and scored eight touchdowns. Other two running backs that have stood out this season for the Whalers are senior Lennox Dias (86 carries, 457 yards) and sophomore Leoni Taitaiau (534 yards, seven touchdowns).

Shoring up the middle of the defense this season for Barrow is senior linebacker Sioeli Tu’ifua, who leads the team with 74 tackles, 15 going for a loss, five sacks and four batted away passes.
