Trey’Dez Green shined against South Carolina after LSU’s top receiver was sidelined, earning praise from Brian Kelly in the process.
Heading into LSU football's game against South Carolina, all eyes were on wide receiver Aaron Anderson, who leads the Tigers in receiving yards this season.
Anderson was dealing with a long list of injuries heading into Saturday and was ultimately unable to play. At that point, all eyes turned to Nic Anderson, Barion Brown, Kyle Parker, and Bauer Sharp to see who could step up and fill the void left by the Tigers’ top wide receiver.
The answer to that question, however, was none of the above. The Tigers’ most productive and impactful pass-catcher on Saturday night turned out to be sophomore tight end Trey’Dez Green, and it wasn’t particularly close.
Green also tried his hand at basketball last year, but if you ask head coach Brian Kelly, he thinks Green’s future lies on the gridiron.
“He’s pretty good at football. I don’t know about the basketball thing. I’ll let Matt [McMahon] decide that,” Kelly said.
“Pretty good at football” feels like an understatement after Saturday night’s performance. Green had eight catches for 119 yards and a touchdown, leading the team in targets, catches, and receiving yards.
This wasn’t empty calorie production either. Near the end of the first quarter, the Tigers tried to punch in a touchdown but fumbled at the goal line, giving the Gamecocks the ball on the 20. They then ripped off a 72-yard touchdown run, turning what should have been seven points for the Tigers into a South Carolina touchdown.
On the next drive, Green caught a pass to get the Tigers into the red zone, then finished it off with a dominant win on a goal-line fade to put the Tigers back on top.

Then, late in the game, Garrett Nussmeier turned to Green again for the play that ultimately sealed the game, as seen below. This catch allowed the Tigers to kick a field goal and make it a two-possession game.
Trey'Dez Green is just SILLY...unguardable.

After the game, Brian Kelly was asked about Green’s performance, and his response suggested that this wouldn’t be the last time Tiger fans see the sophomore deliver a performance like this.
“He’s just a unique talent, and we need to continue to feature him in our offense. He’s got to be part of it,” Kelly said.
LSU’s offense has lacked a true ball winner, someone Nussmeier can trust to turn a 50/50 ball into an 80/20. Although it’s only a one-game sample, Green’s talent is something defenses will have to worry about moving forward. If they need to focus on him, along with the Tigers’ improved run game, it could be a crucial step toward transforming LSU’s offense into the explosive unit fans expected to see this season.
