According to The Athletic, there is yet to be a breakthrough between Liverpool and Ibrahima Konaté (26) in discussions over a contract extension at Anfield. The France international defender’s contract with the Premier League champions is set to expire at the end of the season and will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January.
With the 26-year-old’s contract nearing expiry, interest in the Frenchman is thought to be high. Most notably, Real Madrid hold long-term interest in the former RB Leipzig defender and are keen to sign him on a free transfer – continuing their track record for high-profile Bosman signings. L’Équipe reported that the Merseyside outfit and Konaté were close to an agreement. However, The Athletic understands that an agreement between the two parties is yet to be reached.
Konaté to leave on a free transfer?
Liverpool are no strangers to seeing one of their star players swap the Liverbird for the white of Real Madrid after Trent Alexander-Arnold left the club during the summer transfer window at the end of his contract. The Premier League outfit will be keen to avoid a repeat with the Frenchman but as time goes on, the likelihood increases that he will leave when his contract expires.
