ESPN's Cowboys rumor opens door to trade for fourth-round running back

An ESPN insider believes the Dallas Cowboys could be in the market for a running back trade and a rumor from before the 2024 NFL draft has led to the reporter naming a specific fourth-round running back for the team to target.

The Dallas Cowboys don't have a dire need at the running back position, but it's still a position to keep an eye on for a possible addition going into the trade deadline.

That's because of the season-ending injury to Miles Sanders, which leaves Dallas with a depth issue behind starter Javonte Williams. Dallas does have Jaydon Blue, but he's a total wild card as a rookie.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler isn't ruling out the Cowboys trading for a running back, and he mentioned Miami Dolphins 2024 fourth-round pick Jaylen Wright as a possible target because of Dallas' rumored interest in Wright before last year's draft.

"Wright is a player I've had on my radar for that very reason. A lot of teams were high on him in the 2024 draft, including Dallas, which has a soft need after the Miles Sanders injury," Fowler wrote.

Wright is a logical trade candidate for a few reasons.

The Dolphins are going nowhere fast at 1-5 and look primed to sell at the deadline. Adding to that, Wright has no role with Miami currently after being passed on the team's depth chart by rookie Ollie Gordon, who is the RB2 behind De'Von Achane.

Wright has yet to touch the football in 2025 with Gordon serving as the top backup. In 2024, Wright carried the ball 68 times for 249 yards and caught three of six targets for eight yards.

Because his value is pretty much in the toilet right now, the most the Dolphins can hope for is a fifth-round pick in exchange for the young running back. Dallas has a pair of fifth-round picks in its stable of Day 3 selections that also include a fourth-rounder and two seventh-rounders.

Based on what we saw of Wright in college, he would offer a fine complement to Williams given his explosive skill set, and with his rookie deal running through 2027, he could be a multi-year solution, also.

Knowing that, it wouldn't be a terrible idea for the Cowboys tp spring for a Wright trade if one becomes available to them.
