Cardinal Newman football stuns West Boca Raton in OT to extend reign over Palm Beach

Jack Daniels and Cardinal Newman football still sit atop the throne of Palm Beach County high school football.

WEST PALM BEACH — Jack Daniels and Cardinal Newman football still sit atop the throne of Palm Beach County high school football.

Newman senior Phoenix Donghia scored a rushing touchdown in overtime to lift the Crusaders to a 26-20 victory over West Boca Raton on Friday, Oct. 17 at Sam Budnyk Field in a clash of Palm Beach's premier program and most recent state champion.

The Crusaders (6-2) extended their unbeaten streak against Palm Beach County foes, which dates more than four calendar years back to Sept. 10, 2021.

Newman's victory did not come without a furious final rally from the reigning Class 6A state champions.

West Boca Raton quarterback Trey Moran was flushed out of pocket and narrowly evaded a sack to find Miami commit Javian Mallory in the back of the end zone for a game-tying 4-yard touchdown with 2.7 seconds left in regulation.

Cardinal Newman blocked the ensuing extra point, however, to force overtime.

West Boca Raton (6-2) started overtime on offense and Moran threw an interception to Newman's William Hart on the first play.

Donghia's rushing touchdown secured victory just a few plays later.

Cardinal Newman and West Boca Raton line up for a play during the third quarter of action in a regular season game on Oct. 17, 2025.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
