Penn State 72, Indiana 113: Flush It

Yeah so that happened.

Indiana Hoosiers forward Tucker Devries (12) passes the ball around Penn State Nittany Lions forward Tibor Mirtic (16) during the first half at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

Penn State played one of those “burn the tape” types of games, where everything went right for the other team, and everything that could have possibly gone wrong for the Lions did. It all started when Indiana made its first five threes of the night, which also happened to be their first five shots of the night.

It all ballooned from there, as the Hoosiers’ red hot start got compounded by the Lions’ uncharacteristic slew of turnovers. Suddenly, a six point game turned into a thirty-six point game, and, well, no amount of second-half heroics was going to overcome that.

There really isn’t much more to say about the game. Everyone played poorly, Indiana, coming off a two-game losing streak, looked as ready to flush their own failures as imaginable, and the Lions paid the price.

Player of the Game

Kayden Mingo by default

Let me be clear, nobody played particularly well in this game, but Mingo did, at one point, have over half of Penn State’s points. So that counts for something!

Random Observations

That’s going to happen a lot – Penn State was in yet another “this team is really old” matchup, as is seemingly the case every time they face an opponent.

It’s going to get worse – Indiana will probably be ranked again at some point, making the “the first five Big Ten opponents were all ranked” stat true again. The Lions couldn’t have asked for a worse draw to start conference play.

Growing pains – Better get them out of the way now and hopefully salvage something out of the season later.

Looking Ahead

If you thought this beatdown was bad, wait till Michigan State comes to town. That massacre will be on Saturday, December 13, at Noon on the Big Ten Network.
