Real Madrid’s struggles have compounded over the past month to the extent that there is now a serious threat to Xabi Alonso’s job.

The men in white made a strong start to the season, and everything appeared to be going as per plan until the team beat Barcelona in El Clasico.

After their most impressive win of the season, however, Los Blancos took a turn for the worse and have not looked like themselves ever since. The results, in fact, speak for themselves.

Club legend speaks

Speaking to L’Equipe in a recent interview, former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema opened up on what Real Madrid are lacking and everything that is going wrong for the Spanish giants.

“What they’re missing is just a connection between Mbappe, Vinicius, Bellingham, and Rodrygo,” he began.

“Each player has to know what they have to do on the pitch. Bellingham needs to understand that he’s the playmaker, not the goalscorer,” Benzema added.

Need to define roles

Elaborating on the different roles that should be made clear in the squad, the Frenchman said,

“Mbappe, he’s the goalscorer, not the playmaker. Vinicius, he’s not the defensive midfielder, he’s the left winger.”

“Once each one knows what he has to do on the pitch, that’s it. Because here we are falling about the best players in the world who are on the same team,” he added.

Benzema then supported Xabi Alonso and claimed that the manager does not have much power in a dressing room like that of Real Madrid.

“Xabi Alonso can’t really do anything. He has incredible names, so he must put those names on the pitch.”

“It’s difficult. Each guy has his ego. Those stars need to tell themselves that each of them has things they can bring to the team, and more than anything, they need to communicate,” he added.

Everyone must step up

The club legend then opened up on how it was essential for every player in the team to be open enough to admit that there are players better than them, for the ego could be devastating if not.

“The problem is when you don’t accept that there’s a guy in front of you who scores more goals than you. Those problems happen when you have a lot of stars together.”

“If your teammate is better than you, you have to accept it. Because that teammate still needs the others, he can’t do it all himself,” he added.

Benzema then spoke on how Real Madrid not having many experienced veterans was taking a toll on the dressing room and the environment behind the scenes.

“One other problem at Real Madrid is that there aren’t any experienced veterans left.”

“A guy that will go to Kylian Mbappe, Bellingham, Vini, and tell them what’s going wrong.

At Real Madrid, every star there wants to be the top guy, so it’s hard. It’s complicated,” he added.

The player was then asked if the men in white should consider any changes to the squad, to which he said,

“Should Real Madrid change their squad? No, but they really need to talk and express their feelings.”

“Talking means saying: ‘Listen, let’s watch our match together and then come back’,” he added.

The veteran striker then praised Mbappe for his adaptation to Real Madrid and red-hot goalscoring streak.

“Kylian Mbappe is the one supposed to bring trophies to Real Madrid. He scores a lot of goals and he will continue to score, as he did at PSG.”

“But the most important thing for Mbappe is that Real Madrid took him so that at key moments, he makes his team win. And he is capable of it,” he added.

“Be careful, not alone, with the other players. That’s why I’m talking about connection,” Benzema concluded on Mbappe.
