There wasn’t complexity in Brighton’s approach to the match at Broadfield Stadium today, as they hosted Chelsea Women in a Women’s Super League clash. It all boiled down to hunkering down and enduring as much pressure as possible, looking for a loose ball that could be within their reach in midfield so they can try and move a few bodies out of their own half.
However the Seagulls don’t have a Toni Payne. That was great news for Chelsea, who were able to overwhelm the hosts with shots at goal until Sandy Baltimore finally found the breakthrough near the end of the first half with a beautiful effort.
The plan to simply hold the fort didn’t work, and Brighton were forced to move out of their own half in search for an equaliser in the beginning of the second half. It didn’t go according to plan as right after coming out of their shell the hosts scored an own goal as Caitlin Hayes attempted to save a cross from reaching one of our attackers at Sophie Baggaley’s near post.
Chelsea didn’t want to stop here, as today’s match offered us a great chance to make up not just our points’ different to Manchester City but our goals’ as well. And so Sam Kerr provided Alyssa Thompson the assist to our third goal, the final one in what was a good day for the Blues.
Carefree!
- Second consecutive Women’s Super League start for Lauren James.
- Our aim in the first half wasn’t as good as against Roma midweek. Nevertheless, we got a goal. And what a beautiful one it was from Sandy Baltimore!
- Great game from Alyssa Thompson, with a goal and an assist to her name in 80 minutes of play.
- Next up: Wolfsburg away in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
