FC Bayern played many key games, but which one was most important?
Bayern Munich wrapped up a fantastic first half of the season with a dominant 4-0 win over Heidenheim in the Bundesliga.
While impressive given the circumstances (Bayern Munich was missing nine players, who were either hurt, ill, suspended, or on international duty), it was not remotely the most important showing for the team during the Hinrunde.
So…what was the most important fixture? Some will point to the loss vs. Arsenal as the most vital because it showed the Bavarians the level they will need to get to in order to be a real threat in the Champions League, but — in reality — it was Bayern Munich’s grueling 2-1 decision over Paris Saint-Germain that was most important.
Against PSG, Bayern Munich learned a lot about itself:
- With an attack at full power, Bayern Munich learned that it could rattle PSG’s backline, make its midfield scramble, and limit the effectiveness of its ever-dangerous offense.
- Bayern Munich also learned that its backline — when called upon — had the chops to take on one of the best attacking groups in the world and stand tall.
- Finally, Bayern Munich learned that it truly had the heart and resilience of a champion. After losing Luis Diaz right before halftime to a controversial red card, the Bavarians had to play a man down for the entirety of the second half against the reigning UCL champs. While Bayern Munich did give up a goal, it pulled out its grittiest win in years — sealing the deal the squad’s most important game.
