Indiana's rise to college football's top team under Curt Cignetti has made the Hoosiers a top destination for transfer quarterbacks. Fernando Mendoza went from a two-star Cal transfer to Heisman Trophy winner. He'll likely be on his way to the NFL after the season. But a reunion with a familiar name appears unlikely.
Despite speculation linking Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby to Bloomington, influential voices around the program say Indiana has no interest in pursuing the former Hoosier as a replacement for Mendoza.
Sorsby entered the transfer portal after a productive 2025 season at Cincinnati in which he threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns with five interceptions, while adding 580 rushing yards and nine scores.
Across his career, Sorsby has compiled 7,208 passing yards, 60 passing touchdowns and 1,305 rushing yards, establishing himself as one of the portal’s top dual-threat options. His estimated NIL valuation sits near $2.4 million, with reports of discussions exceeding $4 million, according to On3. And he has been linked to programs such as the Texas Tech.
However, “Hoosier Tailgate” host Shannon “Coach Griff” Griffith dismissed the Indiana chatter during a recent podcast, saying he does not believe Sorsby is a realistic target for the Indiana.
The Hoosiers are coming off a historic 2025 season, finishing undefeated, winning the Big Ten Conference title and earning the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff. The offense was powered by Mendoza, who threw for 2,980 yards and 33 touchdowns, swept the Heisman, Maxwell and Davey O’Brien awards.
Under Cignetti, Indiana has shown it can seamlessly integrate transfer quarterbacks. For Sorsby, though, a return to Bloomington no longer appears to be part of the picture.
