Lincoln City will be "patient" with new recruit Josh Honohan after the defender arrived from Shamrock Rovers with an injury, says Imps director of football Jez George.

The agreement to sign the 24-year-old was made public on 18 December, but he had already picked up the "load-related injury" after the contract was signed a month earlier.

Honohan's final match for Shamrock Rovers was November's FAI Cup final victory against his former side Cork City.

Honohan's move to League One high-flyers Lincoln was completed when the transfer window opened on Thursday.

George said Lincoln would need to "take their time" with Honohan as they aim to get him back to being "symptom and pain free" before easing him into training with team-mates.

"We have been in full dialogue with Shamrock's medical department to ensure a smooth handover in Josh's rehab," George told the club website.

"I would just ask for some patience with Josh.

"We will not put a timeframe on his return to playing but we are extremely positive that Josh will be able to make a significant contribution to the team this season. We signed Josh on a long-term contract for a reason, so we won't rush this process for the matter of a few weeks."
