Celtic have yet to replace Kyogo, who joined Newcastle United last summer
It’s been a year since Kyogo Furuhashi left Celtic, and the club still haven’t managed to find a suitable replacement.
The list of forwards linked with Celtic over the past year is a long one. Evan Ferguson is among those names, although he hasn’t moved.
The 20-year-old striker has been on loan at AS Roma this season but hasn’t played much, and it’s led to some criticism from former players.
Why Troy Deeney isn’t happy with how Evan Ferguson is being used at Roma
Ferguson’s time at Roma hasn’t quite gone to plan, and the goals haven’t come as easily as he’d hoped. Deeney, though, seems more concerned with how Gasperini has handled things off the pitch.
Speaking on CBS Sports, Deeney said it felt less about what Ferguson was doing on the pitch and more about his profile as a player. Gasperini had questioned the striker’s physique, which didn’t sit well with Deeney.
Deeney also pointed out that if Roma aren’t interested in keeping him around, there wouldn’t be any shortage of clubs willing to bring him in.
“You could say that ‘you’re not performing to the best of your ability. You are not scoring the goals I would like you to,’” said Deeney.
“But he is talking about the profile of the player. So, he is making it personal within that moment. For everybody else, he is making an exception of where we are at and where we need to get to.
“That’s my frustration because Evan Ferguson has been there. He didn’t choose to go there because he thought he couldn’t do it. He can’t change his physicality, and then the manager says he’s not for me based on his profile.”
“Okay then,” he added. “Let me go back because Brighton would take him back right now. There are many clubs across Europe that would want him.”
“But they won’t let him leave because they don’t want to lose his goals. Yet they’re still saying ‘he’s not my type of guy’.”
How Evan Ferguson has performed for Roma this season
Roma are in the Europa League alongside Celtic, and unlike the champions of Scotland, they are going great guns and have a chance to secure a top-eight finish.
That included the Italian club turning up to Celtic Park in December, under the ill-fated reign of Wilfried Nancy, securing three points and putting three goals past the Hoops.
Ferguson netted a brace on that day, and this is how he has fared at Roma this season:
As you can see from those numbers above, Ferguson’s season isn’t one that’s likely to have clubs knocking down his door. Troy Deeney on Evan Ferguson’s situation at AS Roma as Celtic search for a striker.
