Vincent Kompany downplays Bayern Munich’s new Bundesliga record, shifts praise back to the players

FC Bayern is in good hands.

It’s safe to say no one expected Bayern Munich’s start to the 2025/26 campaign to go this well. First, Bayern broke a 33-year-old record set by AC Milan for winning their first 13 games across all competitions by recording 16 victories on the trot.

Now, Vincent Kompany’s Bayern side have set the record for the best first half to a Bundesliga season, equaling Pep’s points tally of 47 in the 2013/14 season but surpassing the former manager’s goal difference of 35 to 53.

When asked about the record after Bayern’s 3-1 victory over FC Köln, the 39-year-old manager was hesitant to celebrate the record too much and rather shifted the praise back to his players.

“It’s difficult to say because this contradicts my mentality a bit,” explained a conflicted Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).“It’s not a title. But I told the boys the record they achieved is incredible, because it’s the players who did it. From tomorrow the second half of the season starts, and everything starts from zero again. I’m not used to celebrating records, but I congratulated the boys.”

If the second half goes anywhere near as well as the first, then Bayern are in for a historic season.
