Diego Costa has drawn a comparison between one of Manchester United’s recent arrivals and Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.

United currently sit fifth in the Premier League, with their new signings playing a key role in keeping them within reach of a Champions League place after an up-and-down first half of the season.

Both Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have made solid starts since their moves to Old Trafford. Unlike some of their teammates, they already had Premier League experience before joining, which has likely helped them hit the ground running.

Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens, for instance, are still adapting, while Diego Leon has yet to make an appearance for United’s first team since moving from Cerro Porteno.

While it is clearly the beginning of each player’s time at United, the early indicators suggest that recruitment has improved since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became co-owner and Ineos assumed control of the club’s football operations.

Michael Carrick will still be counting on club captain Bruno Fernandes this season. But unlike Ruben Amorim, the Englishman appears set to use Fernandes in a more advanced position after he spent much of last season deeper in midfield.

Mbeumo has quickly become a key player for United since joining from Brentford over the summer, and his strong start at Old Trafford has even drawn comparisons to Chelsea icon Drogba.

The 26-year-old has scored eight goals so far this season, most recently in the 2-0 win over Manchester City on Saturday.

That goal was United’s first since Carrick took charge and played a part in an unexpected win over Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Cameroon international has emerged as United’s primary attacking threat this season and is already drawing praise from various former Premier League players for how quickly he has made an impact.

One of Mbeumo’s admirers is ex-Chelsea striker Diego Costa, who also played for Wolverhampton in the Premier League.

Costa recently spoke with John Obi Mikel about which current Premier League striker reminds him of himself or Drogba. “The guy from Man Utd, from Cameroon. Bryan Mbeumo,” Costa responded.

Didier Drogba’s history facing Man Utd

Drogba was a key figure during Jose Mourinho’s first stint at Stamford Bridge, playing a big part in one of the club’s most successful eras.

The Ivorian forward took on United 21 times during his career, coming out on top in 10 of those matches.

United managed seven wins against Chelsea during that time, with the remaining four games ending in draws.

Across all those meetings, Drogba scored four goals and provided five assists against United.
