All hail the Portal King. Long may he reign
Lane Kiffin was promising fireworks once the transfer portal opened up and by God has he delivered on that.
You might have thought LSU was done after adding Sam Leavitt, the No. 1 overall player out of the portal. They weren’t. You might have though LSU was finished after getting Princewill Umanmielen, the No. 1 edge in the portal, to flip from Ole Miss and follow Kiffin to Baton Rouge. They weren’t. Instead Kiffin and his coaching staff saved the best for last and, most importantly, it came at a position of need.
Enter Jordan Seaton, the former Colorado Buffalo and No. 1 offensive linemen in the portal. Seaton announced Friday night that he’ll be heading to Baton Rouge to man the left tackle spot for the Tigers in 2026. Leavitt, Umanmielen, and Seaton are three of the top-five overall players to enter the portal and the faces of LSU’s No. 1 ranked portal class. Seaton gives LSU a staggering FORTY TWO portal additions.
Seaton was a five-star prospect coming out of the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He was the No. 1 offensive tackle in his class and was a starter with the Buffs from day one. After putting his name into the portal it was a battle between LSU, Oregon, and Mississippi State, but Lane Kiffin got it done. Seaton had a multi-day visit in Baton Rouge earlier this week, and then Kiffin flew to Atlanta to see him and make another push.
Seaton is the biggest fish at a position of need and will take over the starting left tackle job the second he gets into the football ops building. We’re still 225 days (how fitting is that by the way?) away from Week 1 against Clemson, but as it stands right now I think we can pencil in four of LSU’s starting five along the offensive line: Seaton at left tackle, Braelin Moore at center, incoming Maryland transfer Aliou Bah at right guard, and Weston Davis at right tackle.
It sure feels like LSU addressed quite literally all of their needs and then some. They have a quarterback, they resupplied the running back and wide receiver room, they rebuilt the offensive line, and also supplemented the defensive side of the ball.
On paper LSU’s got one of the better rosters in college football, but if there were ever a reason to eliminate the phrase “on paper,” go look at where the national championship trophy is currently residing. It’s not in Athens or Austin or Columbus or Eugene or Baton Rouge, it’s in Bloomington. Collecting all this talent might work if you’re building your Ultimate Team in CFB 26, but this is the real world. Heck LSU had the best portal class in the country just last year, and the ROI on that $18 million dollar roster was a 7-6 record with a loss in the Texas Bowl.
But for the first time in a long time it feels like LSU has both the coaching and players good enough to compete for a championship and that’s an exciting feeling.
Spot the ball.
