Inter had some contacts with the entourage of Emiliano Martinez, but Guglielmo Vicario remains their top option to succeed Yann Sommer. The Argentine could be on the move in the summer. However, San Siro isn’t the most likely destination, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
The Italian star is seen as more suitable and more attainable at this stage. He’s four years younger and was already close to the Nerazzurri in the past. He considers the Premier League the best championship in the world. Though, he’s keen on the switch and wouldn’t see joining them as a step down.
According to Fabrizio Romano (via OneFootball), Martinez has been offered to Inter by his camp, but the brass isn’t concretely working on signing him, so other candidates, starting with Vicario, are higher on their shortlist. The Nerazzurri were the ones to start the conversation in the second case.
Per Gianluca Di Marzio, the Nerazzurri met with the brother of the 2022 World Cup winner. However, they can at most offer €4M per year, which is far less than what he’s making currently.
Our Take on Inter, Martinez, and Vicario
There’s a long way to go before the summer, and it might be time to see what they have in Josep Martinez, given Yann Sommer’s recent poor showings. They’ll be presented with a host of names by the time they have to decide. Since their roster doesn’t have glaring holes, this is where they should make a splash. The Italian goalie would indeed fit their MO more, but, even though Tottenham didn’t pay a lot to get him from Empoli, he might still be too old and pricey for their ownership to okay a big investment.
