Most Germans are not interested in the Winter Olympics, which start on Friday, according to a survey conducted by the YouGov research institute.
Some 49% of the respondents said they're not very interested or not interested at all in the Milan/Cortina Games, while 40% said they are somewhat or very interested in the event.
In addition, 59% said that it's very unlikely or not at all likely that they will watch the Games.
In view of the impact on the climate, around 37% of respondents still consider the Winter Olympics to be somewhat or completely appropriate, but 42% were in favour of holding the Games at fixed locations on a rotating basis in the future.
Among other things, climate change and rising temperatures mean that winter sports events in many places are only possible with major interventions in nature.
The last Winter Olympics in Beijing were held almost entirely on artificial snow. Although temperatures were well below freezing, there was hardly any snowfall in the region.
However, due to the high water and energy consumption, scientists did not consider the 2022 Games to be sustainable.
Organizers in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo are largely relying on existing facilities, which means the Games will be very decentralized.
But there were also projects that were criticized in terms of sustainability, such as the construction of the new bobsleigh track in Cortina, which was pushed through by the Italian government against the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee.
