Rutgers loses seasoned coaching veteran to Michigan State.
Rutgers senior offensive assistant John McNulty is expected to join Michigan State’s coaching staff as their quarterbacks coach, per a report by Pete Thamel. With this move, Rutgers loses one of the most experienced members of its coaching staff.
McNulty has served three separate stints on the Scarlet Knights coaching staff. His first stint was 2004-2008, where he moved from wide receivers coach to offensive coordinator/ quarterbacks coach. In 2007, he was the play caller behind one of the best offenses in Rutgers history. During his second stint, 2018-2019, he served as the offensive coordinator/ quarterbacks coach under Chris Ash. He spent one year on staff during his third stint in 2025, where he was considered the assistant wide receivers coach. He played a major role in the reemergence of the Knights’ wide receiver core last season.
In 2007, with McNulty at the helm of the offense, Rutgers became the only FBS program ever to have a 3,000-yard passer, Mike Teel, a 2,000-yard rusher, Ray Rice, and two 1,000-yard receivers, Kenny Britt and Tiquan Underwood, in the same season.
In addition to his experience at Rutgers, McNulty has been all around the collegiate and NFL levels. He spent time at Alabama and Penn State as an analyst, was the offensive coordinator at Boston College, coached the tight ends at Notre Dame, and coached the wide receivers at UConn.
His time in the NFL includes stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Los Angeles Chargers. He coached NFL legends such as Larry Fitzgerald and Antonio Gates during his time in the league.
