Micah Parsons is not the only Dallas Cowboys defensive player looking for a contract before the 2025 season begins. Cornerback DaRon Bland has had “some talks” with the team about receiving an extension done in the near future.
“I do but I’m not here to talk about it really too much,” Bland said via DallasCowboys.com when asked if he wants to get something done before the season. “But yea, hopefully.”
Bland is set to be a free agent at the end of the year. His emergence with the Cowboys has been huge over the last couple of years and the role is only expected to grow. The cornerback position is a major question mark right now for Dallas due to a good number of injuries.
Right now, Bland is one of the lone healthy veteran players on the roster. If the Cowboys are holding talks, getting him locked up for the future appears to be a priority. Exactly what the conversations are looking like, we do not know because Bland is still keeping a little bit behind the curtain.
Entering his fourth NFL season, Bland has played in 41 games with 30 starts. Talking about his career stats without highlighting the record-setting 2023 is almost impossible. Of Bland’s nine interceptions, five of them turned into touchdowns. Thanksgiving Day against the Washington Commanders put him in the all-time solo lead, a great moment for him and the franchise.
Five more interceptions were recorded as a rookie, bringing his career total to 14. None popped up on the stat sheet in 2024 but the cornerback only played in seven games due to injury.
If something were to get done, this would not be the first contract extension the Cowboys wrapped up during training camp. Tight end Jake Ferguson secured his future, signing a four-year $50 million deal to remain in Dallas. Even after a rough year, the trigger was pulled to retain one of Dak Prescott‘s favorite targets.
Conversation about Parsons is going to continue, no matter what other situations the Cowboys figure out in the coming days or weeks. It’s the nature of how things work, given Parsons is one of the biggest stars in the NFL.
However, Bland coming to an agreement with Dallas and skipping free agency would be a massive storyline as well. For now, there appears to be a little smoke. Cowboy fans will be hoping there is some fire before the Sept. 4 opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
