The Red Sox may have found a solution to their problem.
Red Sox sign Silver Slugger, Gold Glove through waivers to solve Abraham Toro situation at first base originally appeared on The Sporting News
The Boston Red Sox didn’t make many moves at the trade deadline, as they thought they had a good enough team to make the playoffs. However, they did have one problem they didn’t solve.
That problem was first base. Right now, they have a platoon of Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez, but Gonzalez is only good against lefties, and Toro has been in a huge slump.
It seems like they found an answer, as the Sox have signed Nathaniel Lowe per Jeff Passan, a first baseman who was recently designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals.
Lowe, a former Silver Slugger and Gold Glove, is the man the Sox hope can provide a defensive upgrade as first, as well as some more power.
For reference, Toro has only been hitting around .200 since July 1st, with only two homers of his overall 7. Lowe, on the other hand, hits .216, which is marginally better, but also has 16 homers, nine more than Toro.
Hopefully, this new blood is the answer, and provides new life at first for the rest of the season. Lowe seemed like he was getting hot when the Nats, DFA’d him, as he hit a grand slam in his last plate appearance.
If he brings that power to the Sox, they might be able to make that deep run into the playoffs this season. And for the fans’ sake, let’s hope he does.
