Brock Purdy has two nagging injuries that are making it unclear when he can come back. Kyle Shanahan just made his true feelings about the injury known.

The San Francisco 49ers are once again dealing with a familiar issue: injuries. It seems to be a recurring theme for the team almost every year. When healthy, the 49ers are among the best in the league—but when injuries hit, problems quickly follow. This time, it’s starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who’s been sidelined for over a week with a foot injury.
“The 49ers quarterback is expected to miss 2–5 weeks while dealing with a turf toe variant and an issue in his non-throwing shoulder, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported last Thursday on Good Morning Football,” NFL.com’s Nick Shook wrote.
Heading into the week, it was unclear whether Purdy would be able to suit up. Now, it appears unlikely that he’ll see the field for the second week in a row. And if he can't go, there’s added complication due to league roster rules.
“According to Shanahan, the league rules state that if the Niners want Purdy to be the emergency No. 3 quarterback, the No. 2 quarterback (in this case Martinez) would have to be promoted to the active roster and could not just be a standard elevation who reverts to the practice squad Monday,” ESPN’s Nick Wagoner wrote.
In a recent interview, head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke candidly about Purdy’s injury, explaining how difficult turf toe can be to manage.
“After the Seattle game when they told me it’s turf toe, they could see my face. Then they were like 'maybe, kind of' I was like what does that mean and they said there’s different types of turf toe. There’s ligaments in there you can injure and he didn’t get all the bad ones. That’s why they told us 2–6 weeks. I kind of have mixed feelings about it not knowing what to expect, but the fact that he was able to get out and practice this week and have a chance to play on Sunday, makes me very encouraged to what it could have been,” Shanahan said.

The reality is, Shanahan doesn't know exactly how long the injury will linger. Purdy could be ready next week—or it could take several more weeks to heal. The coach is focused on giving his quarterback the time needed to fully recover, knowing that rushing the process could lead to a more serious setback.
With a key matchup against the Arizona Cardinals ahead, the 49ers will likely turn to Mac Jones to lead the offense in Purdy’s absence.
