FC Barcelona announced on Monday that key midfielder Gavi will undergo arthroscopic surgery to address his knee injury that has kept him out of action since late August.

After trying conservative treatment for a couple of weeks, it was decided that the surgical intervention was the best way to go.

Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, Gavi underwent an arthroscopic procedure on Tuesday afternoon, carried out by Dr Joan Carles Monllau under the supervision of FC Barcelona’s medical services.

The operation followed the completion of conservative treatment for a radial injury to the medial meniscus of his right knee.

Importantly, the discomfort he has felt since suffering a knock in training on 29 August is unrelated to the serious injury he sustained to the same joint in November 2023, which kept him out for eleven months.

Barcelona will issue a medical report on Wednesday, once the player has recovered from the anaesthetic and with his consent.

Five weeks out

Since the procedure was not highly invasive, Gavi is expected to be sidelined for around five weeks. As a result, the midfielder is expected to return in early November.

However, he will miss the first El Clasico of the season on 26 October at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real Madrid, as well as Spain’s 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Georgia and Bulgaria on 11 and 14 October, respectively.

The international break will work in Barcelona’s favour, but Gavi will still be unavailable for fixtures against Real Oviedo (away), Real Sociedad (home), Sevilla (away), Girona (home), Olympiacos (home), and possibly Elche (home) on 2 November.

If his recovery proceeds as expected, he could return for the UEFA Champions League clash against Club Brugge on 5 November.
