Manchester City forward Mary Fowler has signed a contract extension with the Women’s Super League side through to the summer of 2027.
Fowler, 22, injured her anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee in April, but had played in all but one of their league games until then and scored six goals. Despite her season being cut short, the Australia international was named in the 2024-25 Professional Footballer’s Association WSL team of the year.
“City has felt like home to me for quite a while now so to continue this journey with them, I’m really proud to do that,” she said in a media release. “I’m really excited to
continue working with the girls.
“Enjoying my football is a big part of me playing well and City has created an environment where I can flourish in that sense.”
Fowler joined City from French side Montpellier in the summer of 2022 and has been named Australian young women’s footballer of the year in 2022 and 2024. She has played 87 times for the Manchester club, registering 21 goals and 22 assists.
‘Quality and depth’ for City
Analysis
Fowler’s 2024-2025 campaign was shaping into her most impressive yet until her ACL injury in April cut her season short. Up until that setback, she had shown a new level of consistency.
Her versatility has been key, playing as a false nine, dropping deep to link play, or drifting wide where she is most comfortable. She likes to be on the ball, connect play and is a threat, both as a creator and a scorer. Despite not playing the full season, she registered the second-most assists in the WSL and her peers voted her into the PFA team of the year.
Still only at 22, you forget how young Fowler is and how much more she has to give. It is interesting she has only signed a deal until 2027, meaning she’ll only have around 18 months left once she returns from her ACL rehabilitation. However, she will be a much welcome addition to City’s squad, offering quality and depth, upon her return.
