Instant analysis: What went right, what went wrong in the Bills' loss to the Patriots

Instant analysis of the Bills' Week 5 loss to the Patriots.

The Buffalo Bills left the field with their heads down for the first time during the 2025 NFL season.

The Bills (4-1) hosted the New England Patriots (3-2) at Highmark Staidum on "Sunday Night Football" in Week 5 for an AFC East battle. It was not a pretty one for Buffalo and that led to a 23-20 defeat, their first of the year.

With that, here is Bills Wire's instant analysis of the Bills' loss to the Jets:

What went right?

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen rallies the offense as play starts in the final seconds of the fourth quarter at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park on Oct. 5, 2025. The Bills could not rally to win.

While it was not quarterback Josh Allen's best day leading the Bills offense, nor did Buffalo's defense play lights out. Despite not being at their best, the Bills did still have the Patriots on the ropes and New England needed a heck of an effort to win.

The top stars for the Bills included defensive tackle Greg Rousseau and tight end Dalton Kincaid.

The sloppy play by the Bills was overwhelming. The team took 11 penalties and that was a terrible look... now add in three turnovers. That's poor.

Buffalo's secondary was very much a problem as well. The Pats had multiple explosive plays.

What's the bottom line?

The Bills can still take some positives from Sunday. The two big ones: Buffalo is still at the top of the AFC East and the "gut check" provided.

It seems like every season under Sean McDermott's watch as head coach, the Bills lose at game around this point of the season. It's used as a huge motivating tool in most cases.

What's next?

The Bills will play on prime time again in Week 6. Upcoming is a "Monday Night Football" contest at the Atlanta Falcons (2-2). That will be a well-rested team as the Falcons had their bye in Week 5.
