The Los Angeles Chargers have a top ten defense for the second year in a row. Earlier on Tuesday, the Baltimore Ravens took a small step toward trying to fix their NFL-worst defense.
Earlier, the Ravens added former Eagles Super Bowl champion safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to the practice squad. His addition could play a key role with All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton nursing a groin injury.
Now, the Ravens have made another transaction, but this time they’re trading their 2021 first-round pick to the Chargers.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chargers have traded safety Alohi Gilman, a sixth-round pick in 2020, to the Ravens in exchange for pass-rusher Odafe Oweh, the 31st pick in the first round in 2021. The Chargers are also getting a 2027 seventh-round pick from the Chargers (though the selection originally belonged to the Rams). The Ravens will also be getting a 2026 fifth-round pick in exchange for giving up Oweh.
Oweh, is a 26-year-old pass-rusher who measures in at 6-foot-5, 265 pounds. He’s started two of the five games he’s appeared in this season, tallying 10 tackles (one for loss). Oweh managed to record ten sacks in 2024, so seeing him traded less than a year later comes as a significant surprise. Yet, since he’s in the final year of a five-year rookie contract, the Ravens clearly realized he wouldn’t be worth a long-term extension, so they opted to add more depth to their secondary instead.
Gilman is a 28-year-old 5-foot-10, 201-pound safety who has started all five games for the Chargers this season. He’s started all 30 games he’s appeared in in the past three years. Gilman has compiled 22 tackles and three pass deflections this season. Yet, like Oweh, he’s only under contract for the rest of the 2025 season.
