In recent years, both East Texas football stalwarts Tyler Chapel Hill and Kilgore have ended up in Arlington playing for a state title.
The two teams both nicknamed Bulldogs square off in a District 9-4A Division I contest Friday night in Kilgore.
Chapel Hill (4-2, 1-1), which played for the UIL 4A Division I title two years ago, snapped a two-game losing skid with a convincing 72-28 win last week against Palestine. The Bulldogs have one of the best offenses in East Texas, averaging more than 45 points a game, engineered by senior quarterback Malik Gee.
Gee has thrown for nearly 1,350 yards and already has 19 TDs, throwing for four TDs in three games so far, including last week’s game. Senior receiver Damarcion Blaylock has caught 10 TD passes and has nearly 700 yards.
Kilgore, which played for the 4A DI title last season, lost its season opener to defending 4A DII champion Carthage before reeling off five straight wins. The Bulldogs also have two impressive wins in district play, including last week’s 27-12 win at Henderson, which upset the Bulldogs the season before.

During last season’s run to Arlington, Kilgore defeated Chapel Hill in the postseason. Previously, Chapel Hill knocked Kilgore out of the playoffs three straight seasons.
Like Chapel Hill, Kilgore also has an outstanding quarterback/receiver combo in Kayson Brooks and Lakeyleon Graves. Brooks has thrown two TD passes to Graves each of the past two contests. Brooks has thrown for 1,176 yards and 12 TDs, with Graves catching 25 passes for 342 yards and five scores.
But the Bulldogs have brought it on defense of late as well, last week holding Henderson to 214 total yards and no offensive touchdowns. Linebackers Isaiah Watters and Lakeyleon Graves each have 60 tackles on the season.
